Stephen Kings Iconic Movie IT

Stephen Kings I.T. movie was released on November 18, 1990. I had watch the movie when I was about 10 years old with my older brother. I wanted to be tough big tough girl even though he warned me and told me not to watch it because it was going to be scary but I didn’t believe him. I was so terrified during and after the movie that i wasn’t able to sleep alone and I was so scared of clowns. This movie was about a clown named Pennywise who was played by Tim Curry , he was a demon who would pose as a clown and live under the sewer and feed on kids. Kids would hear and see things that their parents wouldn’t be able to see.Thirty years he returns and feeds again and the group of kids know as the “Loser Club” had already stopped him when they were little but had all made  promise to all return if IT returns and once they found out about another group of kids being murdered they had ll returned to stop the evil demon once again. My memory of the Stephen King film when I first watched the movie I remember thinking to myself that he was so scary to the point that I was afraid to walk of sewers. I watched the movie again about a year ago before the remake came out and in all honesty I am still scared of this clown only because they made him look so real and the whole movie did not feel fake at all. I am not as scared like I use to be because I have realized that he wasn’t really but watching the movie did give me a fear of clowns even till this day. The most recent reviews about this movie are saying that it was overly dramatic but that it was a good thing, as well as saying that the true frighten thing bout I.T. is Time Curry and his role as a clown.  One guy thought it was a bad movie but many others though it was a pretty good scary movie.

When comparing the I.T. movie made in 1990 v.s. the I.T. movie made in 2017, its not as scary. The new version looks a bit more unrealistic especially on Pennywise (the clown) face, and even though there are  few jumpy parts in the movie i’d say its more funny then scary because of the way the clowns character is. The face is still a bit scary but The 1990 film clown face is more realistic and scary. When I saw the new movie I did not see the connect between the kids like the 1990 movie had.  In the original film you could see that the actors had a close bond and made it seem like they were really good friends but in the new movie you could tell that there was a bond but not a close one. I’ve heard many people using ” Georgie they all float” its the beginning scene from the movie, i’m not to sure why its so popular to say that line but it is. Till this day Stephen king has made amazing books and movies and he when it comes to scary he knows how to make a book or movie scary.  I would always recommend watching and/or reading anything by Stephen King.

    Hi Chelsea!
I really like the pictures you included for the post. I think it did a great job at showcasing just how scary Pennywise is! I still need to watch the It movies (might be good to do on halloween 🙂 ). I like in the video that you posted that it isn’t about the scary clown thing that’s trying to kill the kids but instead it’s about how the kids team up to take it (no pun intended) down. It gave me a new appreciation for the genre as I have mostly thought of the genre as solely existing to try and scare people but its interesting to think of the potential lessons they can have.
    Keep up the great work!

I enjoy the way you talk about the kids relationship as that is something I didn’t pay much attention to when I watched the new and old IT. Now that you pointed it out I can definitely see where you are coming from. I can agree that the old Pennywise face was scarier but the newer one felt more “real” but that could be because I saw the original after the 2017 version. I like how descriptive this is; I could definitely use more of that.

    Hello Chelsea,
I really like your selection. I remember seeing IT when I was younger also. I definitely did not feel the same way as you. I think partly because I was a teenager and thought the effects of the movie were very cheesy but also because I actually really like clowns. I had a huge collection of them when I was in elementary school. I also have to agree with Zach as far as recognizing the relationship between the children. I also enjoyed how you tied Stephen Kings’ writings and other films in your blog. I still need to see the remake of IT and now IT 2 as well. I might take my son for his 10th birthday coming up in a few days but I do not want him to be too scared. Keep up the good work!

Good idea using a remake to compare and contrast the original film! Its interesting that you chose a film that was recently remade, and it was clever of you to use it to your advantage! I had no idea that the original film was more realistic. I can see why it would be scarier that way. Having only seen the most recent version, I learned a lot from you about the original and I had no idea that the film was released in 1990. I totally agree that the newer version is almost comical at times because of the attitude of the clown.

    Hello!

I have actually never watch the IT movie when I was a kid. The first time I watched it was a couple years ago and only because there was a new one coming. Watching it as an adult, still scared me but there were scenes where it was really not scary but cheesy. I bet if I watched it when I was a kid, I would’ve freaked too! But the newer movie scared me more! I do love Stephen King. I would say he is one of the best horror writers of all time!

I really loved this film (or 2 part series) when I was younger. I actually had the VHS of it. I thought the casting of Tim Curry as Pennywise was brilliant. Tim Curry has always played the most interesting characters and this was right up his alley. What is interesting though is in comparison to the new remake, I have to say this one looks awfully tame. I think Stephen King has always had the right ideas behind his stories but I felt that the new producers really made the film’s horror come to life.
