A deeper view of Girl, Interrupted

this is a trigger warning for anyone who hasn’t seen this movie and doesn’t know what to expect. This movie is rated r and is very EXPLICIT. it has a lot of mental health, rape, suicide, and triggering life events. If you get triggered by these topic I respect you do not read. If you find these topics interesting like myself, you will be fine.

Girl, Interrupted was released December 8, 1999.  I was four years old when this was released. Watching this movie again as an adult makes me cringe knowing I watched it at such a young age. I wouldn’t recommend it to others or my own kids, but I feel it did good for me being exposed to a movie like this at such a young age.

I found a scene Analysis on YouTube which did an amazing job of pointing out the imprisoned feelings. For someone who has never seen this movie, this analysis is a great intro to get a feel for the type of movie it is.

This gives you a good expectation this movie is about to get dark.

Angeline Jolie’s character is named Lisa.  Lisa is brought back to a mental hospital while a few gals on the inside are obviously scared and intimidated. When Lisa arrives inside, she attacks and verbally freaks out on a girl name Susanna, who is in Lisa’s friend Jamie’s old room. The movie is told through Susanna’s perspective. Lisa is having a breakdown asking how Jamie did it, referring to how Jamie killed herself. Multiple staff members contain Lisa. This is a good opening to the movie to show Lisa’s character, and how calm Susanna handles it.

We get a few more events to learn all the characters and why they’re at the mental hospital.

Next, we get to meet Susanna’s parents. This is emotional as you can see how both Susanna and her parents are handling her being in a mental hospital. Brittany Murphy is also a patient in this mental hospital. Her character is named Daisy.

At this point in the movie, we have met most of the charaters and have gotten to know their personalities, their mental disorders, and why they’re there.

We finally get something positive in the movie with an acoustic song.

Susanna feels the professionals have no idea what they’re doing and she isn’t crazy.

Skip forward just a bit, and Lisa and Daisy have a very iconic scene together. Angelina Jolie’s character Lisa is yelling at Brittany Murphy’s character Daisy that she likes being raped by her father. (Trigger warning)

The next morning, Susanna finds Daisy committed suicide. This is showing what Lisa said to Daisy triggered her to do so.

Susanna is crying and shaking in disbelief and sadness to find Daisy’s dead body, Lisa walks up and says “oh, what an idiot.”

Lisa steals her money and items out of her pockets before the police come. Susanna called the police to tell them Daisy committed suicide.

Susanna and Lisa leave before any police or ambulance get there.

All of the girls find Susanna’s notebook where she was writing not nice things about all her new friends and hospital mates, like that Lisa is criminally insane. It is Susanna’s last night there and a really escalated bad way to end it.

The movie ends with Susanna telling Lisa nobody pushes her buttons the way she presses everyone else’s because she’s basically already dead.

This is basically now the end of the movie. This movie does an amazing job of giving awareness for mental health.

I am extremely impressed with the amazing acting of Angelina Jolie. People say she can’t act, yet they must have never seen this movie.

I hope everyone enjoys this blog post and makes you want to watch this movie.

I have never heard of this movie, but after reading your post I am wanting to watch it now. I have always been a fan of Angelina Jolie, especially when she played Laura Croft in Tomb Raider. I am a die-hard Tomb Raider fan and I have never been able to visualize anyone else other than Angelina as Laura. I am curious to watch this because I love Brtitany Murohy because she has such a different personality, one that is unique. I love movies that are raw about mental health because it is something that can be overlooked. I have met a lot of people who have mental health issues and they are the sweetest people I’ve ever met. All you need is patience when it comes to spending time and talking to them.

Great Post. I’ve heard of this movie I could never find it, but after reading your post I definitely want to try harder in find the movie to watch it. I have always been a big fan of Brittany Murphy because her personality was amazing and she had a different personally then others, I had always thought that she never really need to try to act because she was already an amazing actress. I’ve always had an interest about movies with mental health because you get to see whats going on in their minds instead of just assuming and it all shows that this world isn’t perfect and we just need to be patient with others.

Hello Blake! I really enjoyed your comment in the beginning of your blog warning the readers about certain triggers that may arise from reading your blog. I too have an interest in mental health. I was actually diagnosed with PTSD from an incident when I was four years old so I’ve always had in interest in films that are about mental disorders. I actually stopped reading your blog after you mentioned knowing most of the characters because this is a film I am now interested in watching and didn’t want any spoilers! Great blog!! I will be adding this movie to my watch list!
