Emperor’s New Groove

One of the movies I can always go back and watch that had a huge impact on my youth would have to be Emperor’s New Groove and I can’t remember the exact age that I watched it but it was around 5 or 6. The reason I watched the movie was because of my sister as she is five years older and absolutely adored the film. Me and my sister watched this movie time and time again throughout about a couple years. In the movie you watch the emperor, Kuzco, of the Incan empire get betrayed by his advisor, Ysma, and goes on an adventure of a lifetime.

The film isn’t your average Disney film as it has a couple twists and turns, but ultimately ends in the same happy ending most of the movies like it do. The main character, Kuzco, is your average stuck up and selfish character who only cares about himself and will do anything in his power to get what he wants. The hero in the story, Pacha, is a character who sees the good in all people and tries to turn Kuzco into a better human being through their trials.

Emperor’s New Groove is clearly conventional as it has an easy to follow plot, amazing scenery and a cast of well known voice actors like John Goodman. This movie wasn’t based off of any books and stood out on its own in my eyes. There was another movie made after it named Kronk’s new groove, which was based of the original’s side character Kronk. Kronk’s new groove didn’t have that same dazzle as it’s predecessor did and overall wasn’t that great.

The sarcastic tone of this movie really helped propel it into the number one spot on my list of loved movies. In my family sarcasm is integrated into every conversation which helps me understand the way the characters speak to each other in certain instances. One example of this is when Kuzco and Pacha are headed down a river and Kuzco, not being able to see exclaims sarcastically “let me guess there’s a waterfall with sharp rocks at the bottom.” Kuzco’s witty lines like these is what helped me to adore this film. The film is still funny as I learned when I watched it again and this sort of comedy can still be enjoyable as my sense of humor has matured. I would say that I missed most of the humor as a kid as they tend to sneak some adult humor into kid shows in order to keep the adults watching.

The Emperor’s New Groove is a childhood favorite of mine as well. The quirks of selective humor and creative plot line made me fall in love with this movie. I did not think about the influence Pacha had on Kuzco by showing him to see the good in every person. Throughout your post I admire how you used descriptive details and quotes to remind me of the movie.

    Hey Zach!
I definitely agree that this is probably the best disney movie. It has a great job at using humor to make it enjoyable to watch while still having a great story and breaking the norm of kids movies having a morally good protagonist from the start and instead opting for a selfish lead. I hadn’t seen the trailer before and I think it does a great job at showcasing what the movie is about with the tone and balance of serious elements and humor. I think you did a great job at including the videos. Keep up the great work!
