Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence directed by Steven Spielberg is a film that critics are not too happy with. Some critics argue that the movie is not a good film because it is not the filmmakers idea. Others say that the movie has too many flaws to be considered a good film, but that the film itself is interesting. Artificial intelligence is about a robot, David, that is programmed to love.  David  is adopted by a family,  Monica and Henry Swington, who decide to adopt him because their real son,Martin, is in a comma due to a disease doctors haven’t found a cure for.  David tries to do anything to make his mom, Monica loves him. Miraculously Martin gets better and he  is brought back home.  He is jealous of David and makes him do actions that make their parents doubt if it is safe to keep David around. Due to these circumstances Monica decides to take David and his teddy to the woods and leave them there.  David is devastated by this because he just wants his mom to love him back. He decides to go on a mission to find the tooth fairy, so she can turn him into a real boy to get Monica’s love back.

Artificial intelligence is directed by Steven Spielberg, but t wasn’t as well accepted as his other films. One critic says And therein lies the film’s main flaw: it’s not really a Spielberg special. It did have a lot of elements he has made his own but this film was very dark somewhat hopeless and pretty slow.” This critic believes that the at the film is flawed because it wasn’t the filmmaker’s own idea. He says that Steven Spielberg is used to creating wide-eyed extravaganzas and historical epics that capture their audiences’ hearts. Then he goes and adds that Artificial Intelligence is nothing like he is used to and that is why the film failed. Another critic goes as far as saying “Spielberg should thank the heavens that Haley Joel Osment exists. The movie’s success entirely depends on his performance, and his performance is incredible.” On the other hand another critic argues that It is a massively broken film; a film that walks up to the edge of outright fiasco, leans its head over, and waves. And by the way, there is absolutely nothing in this life that I adore as much as movies that almost completely fail, but don’t actually fail in any one way – for they are by far the most interesting. And A.I. is so particularly interesting given some particulars of its creation, that I shall happily call it “important”, maybe even the single most important film of the last ten years. But good, I just don’t know, and I just don’t care; because a “good” A.I. would be of infinitely less value than the A.I that we have.” This critic says the film itself has to may flaws for it to be considered good, but that the plot line of the film makes the story interesting and worth watching.

This film in my opinion was not a bad film to watch, instead I found it sad and terrifying. With how advanced technology is today things like this can happen and that is terrifying because at some point we wont even need real humans to satisfy our needs. I like how the author portrays that. For example, he incorporates a robot male prostitute in the movie and he shows us how women replace real men with this robot to satisfy their sex needs. I also think the filmmaker does a good job at portraying how cruel the world. For example, it is sad when Monica leaves David in the woods and although that breaks many people’s hearts, it is something real that happens in the world nowadays. Although many think that this film wasn’t a master piece, I disagree because I believe Spielberg did a good job at portraying an inevitable future.

In my opinion this is a conventional film. The story is clear and engaging. The main character seeks a clear goal and the audience can understand the events and character’s motivations. It is socially and politically conservative and it is technology appealing as well. The film itself is interesting and in my opinion a very good film overall. Although many critics might disagree with my opinion I do believe the filmmaker ended creating a master piece.

    Graciela,

I often find that I disagree with the opinions of critics. Though I have yet to see Artificial Intelligence, I agree with your opinion that this film is a masterpiece. A movie does not have to follow in the footsteps of the other productions of the director to be incredible. Before reading your short essay, I was almost entirely ignorant of the plot of Artificial Intelligence. Ending your post with your argument that Artificial Intelligence is a conventional film, left the reader with a strong impression of the overall response of audiences at the time of the film’s release. This is an amazing way to end your short essay, and I would greatly enjoy employing this tactic in my future writing.

      Graciela,
I’ve never even heard of this film prior to reading your writing, which helps proves your point of it not being a “Spielberg special.” I never knew that critics were ever even critical of a Spielberg film and found it interesting to actually heat about all this. I really like how you put your opinion in, regardless of what the critics would argue, something I need to do more of in my writing.

    Hey Graciela!
I really liked your essay. I haven’t seen this film, but I found interesting how you deferred with the critics.
    The film plot sounds interesting!
I like how you analyzed everything and how you give your own conclusions.
I found interesting how you compared the movie with real life, I really liked that.
    Thanks for sharing your essay!

    Hi Graciela,
I actually have never watched this film; however, your synopsis gives me a good idea of what it’s about. I feel like you do a good job at explaining movie plots every week, it’s something I both enjoy in your writing and feel like I could do a better job at. I think I’d also look past critical posts on the movie and try to form my own opinion of the movie, which you also did well. Although the majority of your post is well-thought out, I feel like it was a little bit redundant and could use a quick proofreading before you post–that would make it perfect. Overall good job 🙂

I agree with your marked uneasiness when it comes to the rapid advancement of technology, and its more than likely negative outcomes for humanity. I’ve never seen this film, and so your description of the film was interesting to read. Moreover, I enjoyed your in depth analysis of the film.

    HI Graciela
A.I does seem like a very interesting movie despite not being a “Spielberg movie”. I’m sure critics put producers and directors like Spielberg on a pedestal and know what to expect from a certain movie maker but this doesn’t let the Producer try anything new without getting bashed by critics. I like the analysis and summary of the movie and i liked how your essay was organized.
