Blade Runner 1982

Within cell interlinked. Blade Runner the 1982 version directed the great Ridley Scott who is known for the famous the Alien trilogy Blade runner , The marian and much more. Blade Runner takes place in the year 2019 and in really environmentally damaged world where everything is a lot more technology advanced. There are androids in off world colonies helping humanity make its mark in the stars and on earth too working all different types of jobs. Rick Deckard ( Harrison Ford ) works for the LAPD in dealing with all sorts of cases. However it changes later on when an off world ship makes its way to LA in search to expand its limited 4 year life span. When that doesn’t happen Rick has to stop him. Rick is what’s called a blade runner he hunts down rouge and defective replicants that’s his role.

In the film all these replicants were made by the Tyrell Corporation. The company first started out by making replicas of animals since by this time deforestation is a real problem and most of the animals had gone extinct. So Dr. Tyrell who is an incredibly powerful and wealthy man decided to make a labor force that would feel no pain and could be stronger than humans. That’s when replicants were made since civilization greatness comes of the back of a disposable workforce.

The way this movie is filmed is in a conventional way due to the fact that it hits the main points clear and concise. It also gives somewhat of an explanation of what has happened to the world around the main characters and what sort of environment they have been placed in. The storyline is also clear on its purpose it doesn’t have much in it where its not helpful to move the plot along. It all works the way it should in terms of storytelling which is one thing the film really grasped well.

Roger Ebert gave Blade Runner 4/4 stars on his blog at ( RogerEbert.com) describing the movie “It looks fabulous, it uses special effects to create a new world of its own, but it is thin in its human story.” This seems a strange complaint, given that so much of the movie concerns who is, and is not, human, and what it means to be human anyway. Even one character we can safely assume is human, the reptilian Tyrell, czar of the corporation which manufactures replicants, strikes me as a possible replicant. And of the hero, Deckard (Harrison Ford), all we can say for sure is that director Ridley Scott has left clues in various versions of his film that can be used to prove that Deckard is a human — or a replicant”. Which I couldn’t agree more with this movie did create a really interesting world where a lot of questions can be asked as to where did everything go wrong. Since in blade runner 2049 in the las vegas  scene a hologram of elvis starts playing. So this is essentially our timeline and one question is just where did it all go sideways. This movie goes really in depth with the story making it really intriguing and engaging with the audience.

As beautiful and as well constructed of a movie it came short of being a blockbuster hit. The only thing this movie hit was the wall with the box office and ratings. The budget of the movie was 28.8 million which in today’s money is 74.5 million so the budget was clearly not a problem as one can see by watching the movie, what was the problem was the box office. The movie made 32.9 million in 1982 thats 87.5 million. Not much on the return investment the movie saw come back unfortunately deming it a failed blockbuster. Which is somewhat questionable why didn’t it make a lot more or at least what the movie devered to have. I would have expected this movie to hit at least the top 10s in the movie charts back when it came out. I’m not entirely sure why the movie was a flop however I feel as if the movie was  ahead of its time and people didn’t really see what it truly was.

Some of the film techniques this movie had was building highly detailed scales of the city. Insead of using a lot of CG and a lot of green some shots were used by miniature cityscape. This is rare since not many movies did this back in the 80s and it’s rare to see that happen today in modern movies. Blade Runner also touches on the environment which has been a political issue for a while now. The movie shows what a grim reality that we really are so far off from. From  burning forest and deforestation, species of animals going extinct and the use of protein based meats replacing the real thing which is currently happening at the moment. With this its almost a warning to the indistinguishable androids being almost human in every way to the world being in disarray in a trashed world with polluting the planet almost to the point of being uninhabitable. This isn’t too far from us so that’s one way the movies really touches this subject.

Steven, I completely agree with you on the matter that Blade Runner is ahead of it’s time. I love how you interpreted this movie I could feel a strong interest from you towards the subject. Since I have never watching the original Blade Runner I learned a lot from your post. The fact that they based the movie on 2019 and a lot of what they predicted is truly happening is honestly a bit scary. I understand that they exaggerated the time line, however they are not far off. I really admire the way you invested yourself in this film as I was reading I had complete awareness of what was going on in the movie.

    Steven,

I agree that the movie is conventional. The way the movie was made, it makes it fit perfectly on this category. I did not know and I was very surprised when I learned that the movie failed the Blockbuster. I had much higher expectations on how much the movie would make. I really admire how you connect the movie and show its impact on nature and animal. I am always looking to provide more ‘add ons’ and more correlations of this kind to my essays. Great post!
