The Joy that Is Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody is a conventional film in about every aspect, except when it comes to the unconventional actor who portrays Freddie mercury. This rock biopic truly is worth watching, even if you are a nonexclusive fan. If anything is as legendary as there music its definitely this movie.

This movie changed the way I look at the band Queen and at cinematic movies. Before seeing this movie I never had a specific connection with other films. I would only watch them as entertainment, not for the story or the message.  I’ve always loved queen but until this movie, I never realized the exact appreciation I have for them. Though this movie is recent it still makes a valid point about history’s impact on the future. It definitely has a different impact every time I’ve watched Bohemian Rhapsody, especially when you learn and see more than the last time you watched. I’ve seen and memorized this incredible film about five times. Hearing a song from a certain scene I can instantly remember it as the song plays.

Getting to know more through an entertaining aspect and not through a long documentary that talks about the negative side of their lives and careers were refreshing. The film industry and this specific movie can be extremely powerful and meaningful to people’s lives. The astonishing last scene that took place at the distinguished live aid concert was spine chilling and breathe taking. In the making of the aforementioned scene, Brian May and Rodger Tyler came to be amazed with the recreation.

The reviews were outstanding and double-sided.   A tribute to acknowledge Freddie Mercury’s talent, passion, and vulnerability is what made it a great film for all ages. We all knew about the R-rated rock-n-roll parts of there lives and that’s what made it creative.  Instead of another film about the drugs or the dishonesty, they made a movie about why there were negative areas. We finally get to see what its always been about, the music and giving Freddie the honor he always deserved.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a movie I recently viewed and fell in love with. Everyone growing up knows of the iconic band, Queen, but this movie opened up my eyes to the true brilliance that they were. I, too, developed a deep connection and love for this movie. I did not know that this movie was made in Freddie Mercury’s honor. His life is controversial but I am glad that his talent is exposed to the world. Throughout your post I admire how you praise this movie.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a movie that did a great job at showcasing the art that Queen created. I have to agree that the live aid performance was astounding. This video does a great job at showing just how accurate they were with it in the film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z6wJHPhJUM
I also liked that it focused on the music but also gave awareness to the hardships Freddie Mercury had to deal with in his life (struggling with his sexuality, aids, drugs, etc.)
Great job with the inclusion of these videos and keep up the great work!

p.s. just out of curiosity, what were your thoughts on Rocketman? I thought these two movies were both great but really similar and was wondering what your thoughts were on that.

I absolutely love Bohemian Rhapsody too! It is currently one of my favorite movies to watch, especially while traveling. One of the things I love about it is that you can listen to the music and certain scenes without paying that much attention to the screen. I never really thought about the difference between entertaining movies like this and documentaries. I wonder if creating a film with the intent to inform as well as entertain is the most efficient way to educate the audience. Great response to the videos! I really liked how you showed the official trailer.

I am also a HUGE Queen fan, so much so that I learned the solo in Bohemian Rhapsody for a guitar recital in middle school. I was definitely hesitant to watch the movie, because I was worried about what you mentioned in regards to the “drugs and dishonesty.” I have only good memories, so I didn’t want the film to tarnish Freddie’s memory, and boy did they not. I appreciate how you mentioned the piece about entertainment vs a message. It’s hard to really hone in on the story’s goals, especially the first time watching it, so it sounds like watching it a few times really allowed you to dive in. This detailed approach was really cool to read, and I will definitely be adding that to my writing for the rest of the quarter. Great job, thank you for sharing!

    Hey Daniela,
I was excited to read your blog post about this movie because I’ve never seen it. I had no idea what this movie was even about. This made this class fun because I am learning about new movies that I would love to watch. Thank you for introducing me to this movie as now would love to see it. I like what videos you included and how beautifully worded you told it’s special to you.
    Best Regards,
