Hello I will be reviewing Jurassic Park (1993). My first experience of the film was through the use of VHS. I have no memory of seeing the film for the first time. I do remember sitting in my fathers living room in front of a small tv with a very granny screen. While visiting my father I would watch the movie so often that he would suggest watching another movie almost every time, let’s just say I never took his suggestion.
Like many other films of its time Jurassic Park was a major sci-fi thriller. The main difference was the content of the film. A live action dinosaur movie had never made much headway at this point in the movie industry, and who better than Steven Spielberg should direct a film based of oversized creatures with sharp teeth. Another major difference in JP compared to films now is the use of robotic recreations of dinosaurs instead of CGI. CGI technology was used in Jurassic Park but a large portion film contained scenes with robotic creatures. This gave the film a very real and natural feeling. Even the actors portrayed a very convincing fear working with the robots, especially during the scene between Dr. Grant and the overlooking T-rex mear feet away.
This film has also inspired a new trilogy Jurassic World. Unlike Jurassic Park and The Lost World the new director of the Jurassic World franchise uses CGI almost entirely. Granted the use of CGI allows for a greater amount of action per scene, it is also much cheaper to produce CGI animals over their robotic counterparts.
It is hard to compare other reviews of Jurassic Park to my own. I have a favoring bias towards the film other review writers do not have. Overall we can agree that the actors did a fantastic job portraying their parts and that Spielberg did a wonderful job creating convincing dinosaurs for the audience to enjoy. I must say, being an adult and seeing it now really makes a big difference. I picked up on much more details in the dialog now then when I was younger. Much of the plot also makes more sense than it did as well.
Hi Connor,
Great post. I remember watching Jurassic Park as a kid at a sleepover. I wasn’t too thrilled at the idea of a dinosaur movie, but this is no ordinary dinosaur movie! Looking back now, I agree with how far technology has come. Robotic dinosaurs vs CGI technology is no comparison. It’s incredible to think that these beasts used to actually roam the earth, I think Jurassic Park did a great job at reminding us of the dinosaur era, and how Jurassic Park could have been very real.
I learnt from your post that Jurassic World was almost entirely CGI technology. The sheer number of dinosaurs featured in the film would have meant too many robots and too big a cost.
I liked how you used reflective writing by describing how you experienced the movie and what your experiences were versus the critics.
I have always loved watching Jurassic Park and i remember watching it was young. When i first watched the movie i was honestly scared of the dinosaurs because they looked so real, but the second time i watched it, I wasn’t scared because I realized they it was just a movie and i instantly fell in love with the movie. I agree technology has come very far from when the movie first came out till the new movies . It always nice seeing movies with dinosaurs because it reminds me that they once were on this earth and just how smart they were. I did not know that Jurassic world used CGI technology , something new I learned. Great Post!
I was only about 10 years old when I first saw Jurassic Park. My father likes this kind of sci-fi thriller and often let me watch with him. I was really attracted by the scary plots and those lifelike dinosaurs. However, at that time I was too young to think about the technology used in this movie. I am enjoying reading your post, because it surely shows me some knowledge that I have never known. Great!
I love Jurassic Park! I consider it as a horror film since I was a kid when I first saw it and it did scare me. But I would always have love for them. Even watching the old movies now, the dinosaurs looked so real to me. I am one of those people that would want them to come back. Maybe just the herbivores but still.
