My sense is that superheroes can be sorted by color.
A blue superhero, for example, is always the embodiment of justice. They are often responsible for saving the country and the world from danger. The representatives are captain America and superman.
Red-toned superheroes tend to have double identities, they don’t like to reveal their true identities, and they seem to enjoy this lifestyle. People are often shocked when they are identified. Representatives are spider-man, iron man, daredevil. Moreover, such superheroes often get lost for some time and doubt the meaning of life because of some failures. By the way, red style hero, the biggest characteristic should be justice. They tend to be overly attached to the cause of justice. Then, in a crushing defeat, their standards of right and wrong changed. And then, through the indecision, the retreat, the vacillation of values and so on, they finally stand up again. Especially if your partner is taken by a bad person or needs protection from a weak person. As follows: the mountain tiger defeated the bad guy, thus the good defeated the evil, the ending is happy.
As for the green heroes, it’s more complicated. They tend to be real-life losers of some sort, or cowardly, weird people. But also because of this accumulation of nowhere to vent the power. This kind of hero does not cry with, a cry will be amazing. Don’t give up until you make an earthshaking decision. Representatives are the hulk, the green lantern, and kick-ass (and, sometimes, superpowers).
Black superheroes have the most complex personalities. Moreover, they are often plagued by a serious double personality. If we say that the heroes of the red series are troubled by the conflict between good and evil, the irreconcilable conflict between moral conscience and the unavoidable reality. Green heroes are troubled by their inner self-repression, and their strength often comes from such character defects (so, in many cases, they are in a process of self-seeking). So, the hero of black department, often be in personality splitting, it is the torment of double personality even in. The meaning of fighting is not just to defend our country and save our country, but also to save ourselves. They will never know what to do in this world unless they are forced to reorient themselves by the painful experience of their childhood or by some unavoidable situation. Black is represented by batman, catwoman, and black widow.
The biggest attraction of black hero movies is not the dazzling fighting, explosion, flying, or kit kat, but the inner conflicts and struggles of the characters. Therefore, the dialogue of the characters as the center, action, special effects for the auxiliary, often make it more brilliant.
Batman returns with exactly that model. Even the scene, also directly copy the technique of the stage set. Exaggerated figure sculpture, divorced from the real, dramatic style of scenery, flashy fighting, make the film formed its own unique style. In fact, batman returns is more like a stage play than a movie. A lot of wonderful dialogue, not only the different positions of the characters portrayed in depth. Moreover, the ideological conflicts behind the character conflicts are gradually highlighted in the plot. That’s what makes this movie so fascinating.
The awkward situation of feminism in the patriarchal society. As well as excessive feminism, which caused the antagonism between men and women, created the character of catwoman. Perhaps excessive feminism is a heavy shackle on women themselves.
At the real heart of the film is the battle between Bruce Wayne and the penguins, the native American bourgeoisie, and the declining British colonial culture.American feelings about British culture are often not what we think they are. Banter about the rancid colonial culture has been a recurring theme in Hollywood movies.
In the great gatsby, the idea of family in the old era and the sense of superiority in blood line have shaped a group of so-called aristocrats who are stale and hopeless in Nick’s eyes. As a new bourgeoisie, gatsby was suffocated by the belief of striving to make progress in this circle. His infatuation with love blinded his mind. He mistakenly confused his obsession with Daisy with the value of life, and foolishly put his life on the line for a mean woman who was not worth paying for. In dead poets society, English culture emerges as the complete opposite. Everything about Britain is banal, oppressive, and hateful. At the beginning of the movie v. As the host of officials, pour out of a lot of inflammatory rhetoric, actually it is americans who have narrow narcissism of britons ruthless ridicule.
I was talking about the penguin man. He was born in Europe’s upper class family, but because of the ugly appearance and the heart of the savage and his parents abandoned. Through the sewers to Gotham city. He was filled with resentment at the new world because of the trauma of being abandoned and forgotten.
Penguin man is a self-repressed man whose identity is exploited and then abandoned by entrepreneur Max. So, the penguins for the city of Gotham hatred, also followed by the fuel, more and more intense.
In the pre-war mobilisation, the penguin man’s line is as follows:
“… Thank you batman for punishing all of god’s people when it’s time for the eldest sons, the second and the third and the fourth.
It can be said that libido in the life of penguin man has been transformed into incurable resentment due to the long-term self-repression in his heart. In fact, this is also a ridicule of the culture of self-repression in the British culture and the incorrect way of asceticism.
I feel the actor who plays penguin man, his acting skill is the best of all actors, absolutely can be described with amazing. Not only his Shakespearean lines, but also the clothes, the background, the music, and more importantly the gentlemanly manner in which he raised his hand and invested, and the dark distortion in his heart, formed a proper tension. To portray a character out of thin air.
For each of these characters, in the eyes of the audience is an independent and complete existence. What they have experienced, what they cannot let go, how they see the meaning of life, in the wonderful dialogue, in the speech and behavior outside the dialogue, let us be clear at a glance. In this film, each character becomes either good or evil, not willful. It’s about what kind of hurt they were and how to look at it.
I think that’s really what makes batman returns such an impassable classic.
Bruce Wayne as a knight
Like the legendary knight, he lived in the castle, accompanied by a waiter. The batmobile is a replacement for the horse. Wearing a helmet and cape, they help people when they are in danger. It was his life’s mission to fight evil, and it was all about chivalry.
Perhaps the success of Michael keaton’s batman lies in his homely, easygoing nature, with a touch of introversion, sensitivity and a not-too-handsome face. This ordinary, real, ordinary character is in stark contrast to the secret identity of a superhero. It is precisely because of this contrast that the characterization of Bruce Wayne becomes profound and three-dimensional.
Suddenly, only Michael keaton’s first two batman movies are classics. Of the two, the first is a little stiff indeed, the second is almost perfect. In the third film, the heavy, real, complex, self-repressed inner feelings of the character, the changed actor, are immediately gone. It’s more like an idol drama. In this movie, Jim carrey plays the mad scientist, which makes people feel not quite right, making the whole movie become flirty and emotional. It seems that Jim carrey is more suitable for pure comedy, and it is difficult for him to grasp the ambiguous and uncertain atmosphere for such heavy themes as batman. Two-faced people is quite a successful role, but it was greatly lowered by the failure of the whole film. After all, the coin-flipping scene in the finale was a masterstroke, and I laughed. After all these years of watching movies, I still think this is one of the funniest clips I’ve ever seen.
A study of the art of creating villains in Hollywood action movies

Hi Zhen
I also like superheroes. And I consider that black superheroes have more depth of personality to drill into. I like your categorization of different series of superheroes.
And your illustration of main characters in this movie takes me a step close to the major conflict in this movie. I learn a lot from your detailed analysis of characters, plots and the relations between. And what is more important, you get beyond the limit of this movie and compare it with a series of other superheroes movies. That is what catches my eyes and I will take it into my course blog next week.
Zhen, great write up on this classic iteration of Batman. I really enjoyed how you break down each superhero archetype by color. I had never noticed that and, though I do not watch that many superhero movies, it makes sense and I have noticed a few of those themes as well. Thank you for helping make that connection! I would like to incorporate a similar analysis.
Hi Zhen,
I have never really thought of Superheroes as colors, but your analysis of Green Heroes, Red Heroes, and Black Heroes makes a lot of sense, and in fact was probably the symbolic intention of their creators. Batman is definitely a black hero as he strives to defend and save Gotham, while whether we realize it or not, he is ultimately saving himself from his self. He is constantly fighting the sadness and despair of his awful childhood memory. I really liked how your analysis of the colors was not only based on the one color that this movie presents: black. Instead, you connected all the colors used to describe superheroes which was very insightful.
