“Journey to Italy”

Things that critics debate about the film is how iconic it is and how  the plot didn’t have to make sense for it to be a masterpiece.  The whole story does not have a point to it until they very end when you have to take all the pieces from the movie and  put them together. As the James Ryan professor of film studies Wheeler Winston Dixon said  “Voyage to Italy succeeds on every level because it is itself a voyage of discovery, in which to capture the actual dynamics between his two leading actors, and to follow them as they attempt to make a connection with each other, and with the Italian countryside as well.” Rossellini didn’t want you to focus on the surroundings but only the two main characters but the Italian landscape is a nice touch. In order to be interested in the movie, you have you have to feel for the characters throughout the movie and not wait for any exciting fight breakout or a Action scene. You can’t anticipate what you expect form today’s movie while watching this film. The historical relevance of the movie is huge. Many critics and long time Hollywood movie producers agree that it is a historical masterpiece that you have to recognizes a revolutionary film. It is a film that sets the standard for all other melodrama in the future. My experience about the film is that I had too really pay attention to the discussions and understand what was said and why it was in the script. In the interview of Martin Scorsese about Rossellini’s Journey to Italy, he said that he found it to be moving once the main characters finally made up at he end of he movie. In order to really get a reaction at the end of the movie you must understand  the feelings of he two main characters and understand why they are trying to avoid each other and why they argue with each other. Journey to Italy is more of a conventional movie than a art cinema film because there is an obvious dominant are figure and a passive female figure but they do seem as if they are equals in most scenes because they are trying to figure their relationship out and trying to get along with each other. The big question to this film is “Is it one of the best melodramas ever made? ” When Journey to Italy first came out it didn’t not do so good at the box office and wasn’t received to well by critics due it being titled as a Italian movie even though it was made in English. Now in modern day it was voted in the top 50 greatest films ever made and revolutionary film in he movie industry. It is also agreed that it is one of  Rossellini’s best work. Journey to Italy is a classic worth seeing and a great film to study to understand how our modern day Hollywood cinema began to gradually adapt to what movies are today.
