The movies Forrest Gump and Avatar seem to have no real similarities. One is exploring new realms of never before seen land where the other is the story of a young man growing up in the in the Vietnam era. Both movies were huge motion pictures that impacted the movie society. These films are still recognized today and are still mentoring future films. These movies have claimed many awards and with some granted to the actors; with both films still appear on the top charts for amount of money made.
The movie Avatar is seen as this virtual journey through the CGI planet of Pandora. This movie really began development in 1994 and Cameron had written about 80 pages of the film. It was planned to start filming in 1999 after the completion of his movie, Titanic in 1997. However, he postsponded it because he knew that their needed to be better technology to achieve the vision he had for the film. The movie was budgeted at $237 million and used extensive new motion capturing film techniques. It was recommended to watch the film in 3D because it amplified the viewing. There was also a couple 4D viewings in select theaters in South Korea. The advanced technology used reminds people off what can really be created that they have never imagined before. It effected society because it set the bar for the future of the film industry. The animation is used to wow the audience and get the interest of the public to get people wanting more. The original trailer does just that, it shows clips of the beautiful planet with mind blowing features along with its intense yet caring story line. However, this film does not necessarily connect to a certain period, it can be seen to the viewers of possibilities in advancement in the military in years to come. This movie did carry some controversy behind it, there was some backlash about the military aspects. People thought that it showed a bad reputation on the military and their forces used and the audience that viewed this would consider them the “bad guys”.
The movie Forrest Gump came out in 1994 and takes the audience on an adventure through Forrest’s life. This American romantic drama tells the story of Forrest Gump from young child, to Vietnam war hero, shrimp boat captain, and finally settling down with his true love Jenny and having a child together. This film does a good job at showing the political issues of its time period. How the war had effected society were some people thought it was an honor and others hated the thought of it and just wanted peace? This movie has little CGI moments, primarily in just the war scenes, the movies story line its self was strong enough to get the viewer to fall in love with the story. The creators of the film also decided to use a comprehensive soundtrack to pinpoint certain time periods that were taking place. This soundtrack actually ended up selling over 12 million copies worldwide. The film its self-became one of the top-grossing films earning $667 million while it was in theaters. This movie has created much more then what appears on the screen, the amount of sales from clothing/souvenirs and restaurants has blown up. It is such a recognizable film, people can simply just say “Run, Forrest, Run” or “Life is like a box of chocolates” and know exactly what movie their talking about.
Besides the fact that both these movies are huge hits and very recognizable, the also share some other things in common besides the huge amounts of money they both grossed. The directors of both movies were seen as somewhat strict director, they wanted to get the job done and done well. It was even said that James Cameron would nail gun cell phones to a wall if they would ring on set. In some of my readings I also found that both films perfected their use of camera angles and facial expressions/make up to enhance the emotion of the character or the scene taking place. It’s said that sound at the right times is just as important, making someone feel sad, or scared, or even question what’s going to happen because the music makes them feel a certain way. All in all, the love, adventure, and action bring people to the edge of their seats wanting more and more from the story lines. However, the use of CGI advances Forrest Gump and it makes Avatar what they are today.
